The Queer Muslim Network will host a special event at the Wildseed Centre for Art & Activism to bring 2SLGBTQ+ Muslims together to celebrate queer joy and learn more about how to uplift fellow community members and engage in advocacy. With passionate guest speakers and special performances by drag artists and poets, we hope to forge stronger bonds in our community through shared culture and art.
Contributing To An Inclusive Canada
Queer Muslims represent a double minority, facing marginalization within both mainstream 2SLGBTQ+ spaces and Muslim communities. Thousands of Queer and Transgender Muslims across Canada experience alienation and discrimination in local masjids, preventing them from expressing their true identities. Furthermore, the influx of 2SLGBTQ+ Muslim refugees seeking asylum from countries with anti-Queer laws and unjust treatment highlights the urgent need for supportive spaces.
To foster a truly inclusive Canada, it is essential to establish dedicated spaces for Queer Muslims. These spaces will allow individuals to maintain connections to their culture and faith while being affirmed in their queerness. By creating such inclusive environments, we can ensure that Queer Muslims have the support and community they need to thrive.
Further, the existence and persistence of queer Muslims positively impact the queer and Muslim communities separately, in that our intersectional identities resist queerphobia, transphobia, and islamophobia and break misconceptions and stereotypes about queer people and Muslims. This furthers the goal of creating a more inclusive and diverse Canada.
