Jamii Sessions
Hosted By: Iesha A.
Program for Ages: 20 to 29 Years Old.
Jamii Sessions fosters mental wellness and community among Black diaspora youth in Toronto through monthly workshops and events. Inspired by the Swahili word for community, “Jamii,” participants engage in poetry, wellness activities, and advocacy training to build resilience and empowerment. Led by EastMind Collective, this initiative provides a safe space for creative expression, critical dialogue on racial identity, and collaborative community projects. Join us to cultivate support networks and promote mental health awareness in a nurturing environment. Our intended demographic is Black diaspora youth between 18-25.
Addressing Community Needs:
Jamii Sessions addresses critical needs within the Black diaspora youth community in Toronto:
Youth Empowerment and Mental Health Support: Many Black youth face isolation and stigma related to mental health issues. Jamii Sessions provides a platform for youth to discuss mental wellness openly, offering workshops on coping strategies, peer support networks, and access to mental health resources. By fostering a supportive environment, the project aims to empower youth to manage their mental health and build resilience.
Cultural and Social Inclusion: Cultural identity and social belonging are vital for Black diaspora youth who often navigate complex intersections of identity in predominantly white spaces. Jamii Sessions celebrates cultural diversity through activities like poetry readings, cultural storytelling, and art workshops, promoting a sense of pride and connection to heritage. This inclusive approach helps combat cultural isolation and strengthens community bonds.
Youth Leadership and Advocacy Skills: Many youth lack opportunities to develop leadership skills and engage in advocacy that addresses their unique challenges. Jamii Sessions includes training sessions in activism, advocacy, and community organizing, equipping participants with the tools to address systemic issues affecting their communities. By nurturing leadership capabilities, the project empowers youth to become agents of change in their own lives and beyond.
Through these initiatives, Jamii Sessions aims to create a supportive community where Black diaspora youth can thrive emotionally, culturally, and socially, contributing to a more inclusive and resilient Toronto.
