EmpowerHer: Self-Defense and Yoga Workshop for Refugee & Newcomer Girls of Colour

Hosted By: Fatemeh J.

Program for Ages:

Join us for a single-day event tailored for 20 refugee and newcomer girls of color, aged 12-19. Our goal is to introduce them to self-defense fundamentals and yoga for personal safety and well-being. The day starts with icebreakers, creating a comfortable space for bonding. Then, we’ll flow through gentle yoga to ground their bodies and minds. Workshops on verbal and physical self-defense follow, ensuring practical skills are learned. A community lunch fosters connection, while a reflective journaling session promotes self-awareness. Each participant receives a care package, reinforcing skills and providing ongoing support. Our mission is to empower, build community, and promote well-being.

Addressing Community Needs:

1. Youth Empowerment: By providing self-defense and yoga training, the project empowers refugee and newcomer girls aged 12-19 with essential skills for personal safety and confidence. This empowerment is crucial, especially in vulnerable situations where these youth may face various challenges.

2. Recreation and Sports: The event incorporates recreational activities like yoga and self-defense, promoting physical activity, well-being, and a healthy lifestyle among participants. This addresses the need for recreational opportunities that enhance overall health and resilience.

3. Cultural and Social Isolation: Through community introductions, bonding activities like a communal lunch, and a supportive environment, the project combats cultural and social isolation often experienced by refugee and newcomer communities. It fosters a sense of belonging, connection, and mutual support among participants, addressing social and cultural integration needs.
