Project Summary:
Intended for youth ages 13-29, the Community Days project explores race, difference, and the importance of inclusive spaces through an arts lens. By painting, performing poetry and spoken word, and exploring the rich and diverse fabric of Scarborough’s Woburn-Malvern communities, youth participants will share lived experiences with one another and gain valuable experience in leadership and engagement with their peers. Youth participants will have the opportunity to participate in a Paint Night Social, Open Mic Night, and a community walk.
Addressing Community Needs
Youth empowerment will be addressed with this project, as we will be supporting participants in expressing themselves through various art forms, and gaining the confidence and skills necessary to speak out about issues that matter to them. Diverse neighbourhoods, inclusion, and diversity will be addressed with this project, as participants will witness firsthand what these culturally-diverse communities look like, and will connect with others in the project that have different lived experiences and perspectives. Cultural and social isolation will be addressed with this project, through the formation of a community of youths. Youth isolation is rampant in Toronto as a whole, and coming together to create is a method of circumventing this continued isolation of young people in the city.
