L’union Fait La Force ( Stronger Together)
Hosted By: John T.
Program For Ages: 5 to 60+ Years Old
Everyone is welcome to attend this event whether they are a part of the Caribbean community, a resident, or simply someone interested in experiencing a new culture. We are showcasing Haitian music, food, and dance and promoting the cultural expression of the Caribbean.
Our event activities will include: 1) Dance workshops where attendees can enjoy interactive lessons of Haitian dance moves from experienced instructors. 2) Recreational sports – soccer and volleyball for attendees to engage in fun physical activity and be inclusive for all ages and skill levels. 3) Live Performances to bring visibility to local talent and attendees enjoy a diverse range of performers. At our BBQ we will have prize giveaways for each activity section which will include: gift cards to Haitian restaurants promoting the visibility of Haitian culture and beauty boxes featuring black-owned business products. Most importantly this event will serve as a platform for a Haitian network. There are many Haitian immigrants each year looking for a network of Black people who also speak Creole or French. Through this event, we plan to register attendees on a Slack channel where we can share opportunities, resources, jobs, and connections in the Haitian community.
Contributing To An Inclusive Canada
Offering various activities such as dance workshops, live performances, volleyball, and soccer encourages participation from all community members, regardless of age or background. These activities provide opportunities for people to interact, build relationships, and create a sense of community. By highlighting the rich cultural heritage of Haiti, the event promotes understanding and appreciation of Caribbean cultures. This celebration of diversity helps foster a multicultural environment and celebrate cultural diversity. Our event aims to increase the visibility of Haitian culture within the broader community, encouraging inclusivity and diversity while also enhancing a sense of belonging for Haitian identity within the broader Canadian society. After the event, we are opening up a Slack channel to provide Haitian Canadians with a safe space to dialog and continue to network and foster an inclusive community. Many Haitian immigrants experience social isolation because they lack established social networks, especially with other Black French-speaking people. Our platform addresses the lack of targeted community services and resources to support the Haitian community in areas such as job placement, legal aid, and social services.
